He will serve as the PKOl's acting president until the end of Piesiewicz's term, which runs until April next year.
Kmita's appointment was approved by the PKOl board on Monday with 43 votes in favour, nine against and one abstention.
The vote came after Sports Minister Jakub Rutnicki in late August called on the PKOl to take prompt action to regain public trust following Piesiewicz's detention.
Kmita takes over after Piesiewicz was arrested in Warsaw on August 27 as part of an investigation into Zondacrypto, a cryptocurrency exchange that was the PKOl’s general sponsor from October last year until April.
Zondacrypto also financed figures from Poland's right-wing opposition.
Piesiewicz was charged with influence peddling and favouring a group of Zondacrypto creditors at the expense of others as the company faced the threat of insolvency.

Piesiewicz has denied the charges. A court ordered him to remain in detention for three months, a decision upheld on Monday by the District Court in the southern city of Katowice.
Kmita is sports director at private broadcaster Polsat. He previously headed the sports editorial team at Radio Eska Wrocław and served as the broadcaster's CEO before becoming head of the sports department at public broadcaster TVP1.
He has worked at Polsat since 1999 and was one of the co-creators of Polsat Sport, the sports channel that began broadcasting in 2000.
He is regarded as an important promoter of volleyball in Poland and has been involved in planning and organising major volleyball events in the country.
He was also one of the co-founders of the MMA Polska organisation and was involved in the Polsat Boxing Promotions project, which aims to promote boxing in Poland.
He was elected a vice-president of the Polish Olympic Committee in April 2023.
